What is EEG Neurofeedback?

EEG Neurofeedback is a learning strategy that enables persons to alter their brainwaves. Think of it as "exercising" the brain.

EEG Neurofeedback has been in use since the 1950's. More commonly used in Europe.

What is it used for?

EEG neurofeedback is used for many conditions and disabilites in which the brain is not working as well as it might. These include Attention Deficit Disorder and most severe conduct problems, specific learning disabilites, and related issues such asleep problems in children, teeth grinding, and chronic pain such as frequent headaches or pediatric migraines. The training is also helpful with the contol of mood disorders such as anxiety, stress, and depression.

How is it done?

EEG Neurofeedback training is a painless, non-invasive proceedure. One or more sensors are placed on the scalp, and one to each ear. The brainwaves are monitored by means of an amplifier ad a computer-based instrument that processes the signal and provides the feedback. This is displayed to the trainee by means of a video game, or other video display along with audio signals. The trainee is asked to make the video gamemove with his/her brainwaves.

Gradually, the brain responds to cues that it is being given, and a "Learning" of a new brainwave pattern takes place. The "NEW" pattern is one which is closer to what is normally observed in individuals without such disabilites.

What Therapeutic Applications Have Clinical Evidence?

There are clinical reports and case histories concerning the effectiveness of Neurofeedback, and their therapeutic applications.

A list of which EEG Neurofeedback has shown STRONG evidence of effectiveness are as follows:

  • Attention Deficit disorders (ODD/Hyperactivity etc...)
  • Attachment disorder
  • Autoimmune dysfunction
  • Chronic Pain
  • Anxiety
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
